Bill Proposes Open Meeting Act Agenda Change

House Bill 4687 (Rep. Pihos, R-Downers Grove) amends the Open Meetings Act. The bill requires that any required agenda must be sufficiently descriptive to give the public reasonable notice of the items that will be considered or will be the subject of final action at the meeting. The bill also requires the public body conducting a public meeting to ensure that at least one copy of any requested notice and agenda for the meeting is continuously available for public review during the entire 48-hour period preceding the meeting. Due to its ambiguous language, this bill poses a litigation minefield and would potentially open up virtually any action that that a public body takes to a challenge over the sufficiency of notice.
