About Us
The Academy for Municipal Excellence was established in 1997 by the Illinois Municipal League and the Institute for Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois to develop leaders—men and women with a strong vision for their community who can effectively and efficiently administer municipal government.

The mission of the Academy is simple: to provide municipal officials and staff with the basic tools to meet their responsibilities head on.

The Academy created the Leadership Enhancement And Development (LEAD) course, and its companion course, The Leadership Forum, to train municipal officials in the skills of leadership and to equip them with the thought processes they need to be successful leaders. Other programs  are listed in our "Programs" section to explore new ideas about leadership and its management.

Please take a few minutes to examine the program offerings for more specific information. Hundreds of your fellow municipal officials have already participated in the Academy’s unique programs. Isn’t time you join them?
